Stages of Redevelopment
Follow our Roxy Community Theatre on it's redevelopment journey.

STAGE 2 - COMING SOON

Roxy Redevelopment Committee (RRC)

The Roxy Redevelopment Committee (RRC) was formed at the beginning of this transformative journey to serve as a vital bridge between the community and the project’s leadership team.
From day one, our purpose has been to listen—to the hopes, needs, and aspirations of the people of Leeton—as the Roxy Theatre undergoes the most significant redevelopment in its nearly 100-year history. By working closely with local residents, businesses, and cultural groups, we’ve ensured that this revitalisation honours the Roxy’s rich heritage while embracing the future with open arms.
The RRC is incredibly proud to see the results of years of planning, consultation, and community spirit come to life. As the curtain rises on this exciting new chapter, our community is ready to engage with the Roxy in fresh and inspiring ways.
The Roxy Community Theatre has always been more than a building—it’s a symbol of creativity, community, and shared experiences. We hope this new era will inspire a whole new generation of talent, offering endless opportunities for artistic expression and connection.
Welcome back to the Roxy—your Palace of Dreams. Let’s celebrate its bright future together!
The Roxy Theatre Redevelopment
The Roxy Theatre sits at the heart of Leeton, a vibrant inland town known for its stunning Art Deco heritage and unique design by visionary planner Walter Burley Griffin. Leeton is also famous as the final home of legendary Australian writer Henry Lawson.
Now, Leeton is embracing a bold new chapter one that celebrates creativity, performance, and learning. At the centre of this vision is the Roxy Theatre.
The Roxy Redevelopment is being delivered in two stages:
-
Stage 1 has focused on essential upgrades: structural repairs, compliance improvements, and future-proofing the building. This stage has already seen over $3.8 million invested in demolition, design, planning approvals and restoration works.
-
Stage 2 will transform the Roxy into a national-standard multi-purpose performance space. It will become a hub for world-class performances, training opportunities, and partnerships with leading arts organisations.
The project is proudly supported by:
-
NSW Government ($3.945 million through the Regional Cultural Fund)
-
Murray-Darling Economic Development Program ($1 million)
-
NSW Stronger Country Communities Fund ($981,000)
-
Leeton Shire Council ($3.4 million+)
-
Community fundraising and smaller grants ($805,000)
-
In June 2023, Council took on the role of Principal Contractor, leading a skilled project team to complete the works within the available budget.
A Community-Driven Vision
Leeton Shire Council has placed the Roxy at the core of its civic masterplan, recognising its potential to unlock cultural, educational, and economic opportunities for the region. After extensive community consultation and expert advice, it became clear that to bring this vision to life, the precinct would need to grow beyond the original building.
To achieve this, Council purchased the neighbouring Sharpe’s Building in 2019. This allowed for a more ambitious redevelopment—protecting the Roxy’s heritage while creating a modern, flexible venue that meets today’s standards.
